St Anne's Update

Year 1
In maths we have been sharing biscuits out into equal groups and introduced the children to fractions. The children had to make sure that it was always fair by making sure that each group had the same amount. The children had to resist temptation as there were a lot of biscuits for investigation! In Geography the children have been learning their address and next week we will be locating homes and shops in the local area on a map.

On Thursday the children had a busy day being creative! They painted flower pots in gardening and designed their own mosaic for the new garden at Fox. Their designs were beautiful and we can’t wait to see them on display.

Year 2
This week, Year 2 have had lots of fun creating their own farmers based on the three farmers from Roald Dahl's 'Fantastic Mr Fox'. They then wrote some excellent character descriptions using lots of ambitious vocabulary! In numeracy, we have started our multiplication unit and have introduced this topic through a range of ways including repeated addition and arrays. The children loved listening to the story 'How Many Legs' to help us understand this idea.  We looked at arrays we can find in real life and used lots of resources to help understand what multiplication is. In history, the children re-enacted significant events in Florence Nightingale's life and we were so impressed with how the children all jumped into character! In P.E. the children have been getting to grips with some hockey skills and even played some mini-matches!

School Nurse

On Monday 23rd January from 8.30-12.00,
Nadine Powell, our new school nurse, will be hosting a
drop-in clinic for parents. She can support with a range of issues, including bedwetting, diet, sleep and the management of medication. There will be a sign-up sheet in the Fox school office for this clinic.

On Tuesday 28th February from 9-10am,
Nadine will be leading a
sleep workshop for parents at Fox. She will share advice and research on how to support your child to get a good night's sleep and respond to any queries or concerns.

Bedwetting
Are you having issues with bedwetting at night? The school nurse can support with this. You can see her at one of her drop-in clinics, but she is also happy to lead a session for a group of parents on this issue if there is sufficient interest. If you would be interested in attending a workshop on how to deal with bedwetting, please email polly.calvert@foxprimary.co.uk

Poetry Competition

As we have so many amazing poets in school, we have the opportunity to enter a poetry competition (for children aged 7-11), with the chance of having the winning poem published in a book! The theme is 'Once upon a dream' so the poem should be based on dreams - either one you have had or you can make one up! Let your imagination run wild and create a whole new dreamworld...

For more information see: https://www.youngwriters.co.uk/competitions/once-upon-a-dream/ or ask for an application form from Mrs Buchanan (3B). The deadline is the 17th February 2017

 Martin Luther King
This week all classes have been learning about Martin Luther King Jr to celebrate MLK day which was on Monday 16th January. Martin Luther King was a civil rights activist in the 1950s and 1960s. He led non-violent protests to fight for the rights of non-white Americans. He wanted America to become a society where there was racial equality and people were not treated differently based on the colour of their skin. One of his most famous protests was the Montgomery bus boycott. This started because a woman called Rosa Parks would not give up her seat to a white man on a bus. As a result, she was arrested and fined. Martin Luther King led a boycott of the buses in which African Americans refused to ride on the buses to protest the segregated seating. This is regarded as the first large-scale demonstration against segregation.

Martin Luther King's most famous speach 'I have a dream' was delivered to 250,000 people and is still celebrated annually in America ('Dream Day').
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

FSA update

The FSA will meet for the first time this term on Friday 27 January 2017 at 9:15am at Fox (Year 1 classroom, ground floor).

During the meeting we will seek approval of the budget for the current fiscal year. The proposed FSA budget for the years ending 30 September 2017 and 2018 will be sent as an attachment via Schoolcomms.
Two budget years are presented as some of the expense items pertain to both periods.  We will not be sending out a survey with specific cost items to approve or not approve (as was done in the past) as
approval of the budget is approval of the cost items in the budget.

If you have any questions or comments on the budget in advance of the meeting, please contact Anthony Marraccino at 07789553699 or amarraccino@gmail.com.

RB Erin Erin has tried so hard in her phonics lessons this week and her effort is really paying off. She is now hearing and saying all of her sounds! Everyday she has been focused and ready to learn; segmenting and blending all her words for Fred the puppet. Well done Erin, our phonics superstar!
RC Ari

Ari did some amazing problem solving this week in Maths. It was wonderful to see him persevere and see his brain doing so much thinking and learning! Ari is always so enthusiastic about all his learning and we love it!

1B Isar Isar worked very hard in his writing this week. He independently wrote a fantastic story about the mouse and the Gruffallo. We were all the edge of our sits when Isar read us his gripping story. It was packed full of powerful adjectives. Keep it up!
1H Marcel Marcel has been a star this week! The effort he has put into his learning has been fantastic and his enthusiasm to read and write has been infectious. We were all very impressed with his excellent independent writing! In addition to this, Marcel is always very polite and kind to all of his classmates. We are lucky to have you in 1H! Keep it up Marcel!
2B Ferdinand Ferdinand is a star every week. Always one of the first to line up, or sit on the carpet—it is no wonder he often has a lot of dojo points! In addition to this, we have really noticed Ferdinand’s confidence increasing recently and have loved getting to know how funny he is! Keep up the good work Ferdinand!
2J Ruben Ruben is such a kind, helpful and hard working member of 2J. Ruben’s writing always shows off how carefully he listens on the carpet and this week, Ruben wrote some fantastic complex sentences that really showed off all the ambitious language he has learnt in our Roald Dahl unit as well as this new skill. Well done Ruben and keep it up!
3B Felix

Felix should feel so proud of himself as not only has he been incredibly focused and engaged in every lesson, but he has even done extra learning out of class! We were so impressed with his extremely well written story, which he wrote at home, and his excellent collaborative learning during partner work in class. Very well done Felix – keep up this fantastic learning!

3F Maela

Maela has been a star this week, as she is every week, for her diligent attitude towards her work. She is highly inquisitive, which came through in her science lessons this week- she was asking profound questions about gravity that even caught Miss Flegg out! Well done Maela- keep up the excellent work.

4F

4W
5P Emma Emma has been an incredible learning partner in Numeracy.  She has encouraged and supported her partner positively and passionately, resulting in some fantastic problem solving! Emma, you are such a superstar - Keep it up!
5T Joaquin Joaquin has had a great week. He's been a super problem solver in maths, undeterred by the complexity of our fractions learning, just determined, focused and creative in his approach. He's also really pushed himself in literacy with great results. Well done.
6G Scarlett’s

Scarlett’s work in Maths this week solving fraction word problems using the bar model has been fantastic. She  presented her work beautifully and gave excellent explanations to the class. Well done for your hard work Scarlett!

6J Julian Julian has worked so hard this week and has impressed us all with his attitude towards his learning. He has made an excellent effort to focus and participate in all his lessons. He has also set an excellent example to those around him by walking sensibly around the school. Keep it up Julian!
